Pastel is a beautiful and surprisingly permanent medium, but because the pigment rests on the surface of the paper, it should be framed by someone who understands how to handle original pastel artwork.
Unfortunately, not every framer has experience with pastels. Some have been taught to spray a fixative on the painting or to give the back of the artwork a firm tap to “settle “any loose pastel dust. Neither of these practices is recommended. A pastel painting should simply be handled carefully and framed without disturbing the surface.
Framing a pastel correctly is not difficult – it simply requires the proper technique.
Today, many pastel artists and professional framers prefer to frame the painting so it rests Gently against the glass. Others prefer using a spacer or Matt to create a small air gap between the painting and the glass. Both methods are widely accepted, and the choice often comes down to personal preference.
If your budget allows, my favorite glazing is Tru Vue Museum Glass. it offers exceptional clarity while virtually eliminating glare, allowing you to enjoy the true colors and subtle layers of the pastel.
either Framing method can be used with standard – size or custom frame frames. If you’re painting fits a standard size, you may want to consider a PleinAir frame. these frames typically have a wider molding that beautifully compliments pastel paintings and gives them a timeless, gallery – quality presentation.
if you or your framer have any questions about framing one of my paintings, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I want you to enjoy your painting for many years to come, and I’m always happy to help.
Below is an example of pastel painting in a PleinAir frame with the painting directly next to the glass.

The example below shows a double mat with a spacer between it and the painting.
Then glass over the top.

The example below also shows a double white mat with a spacer between it and the painting. Then glass over the top. It is a nice clean look.

Moulding, wider mats, and fillets achieve a highly stylized and sophisticated look.
The 2 examples below show a linen mat with a fillet between it and the painting.
The glass tops the mat, fillet and painting. The painting is separated from the glass by the fillet. Take care to lay this painting on its back so the pastel dust does not get knocked down in transport. Carefully hang it on your wall.

The example below shows a linen moulding insert. The painting is directly against the glass, but inside the linen moulding.
